Did You Know You Really Do Use Scotch Tape?

Last week I posted about a facebook group I’m in doing a weekly mani now, with links to all those that participated. This week’s challenge was to do a “Tape Mani”. I keep seeing all their eBay buys for the skinny little tapes and I’ve never done a tape mani, so I jokingly asked if I could use Scotch tape. Jeez, I didn’t know that’s what they all were using when they talk about it! Smile

Since I don’t usually have the time to go all out on manis I thought it would be fun to do these if I could do them quickly and not really worry about how great they looked or how long I’d wear them beyond picture taking for the blog. But like last week’s Water Marble Mani, this one was quite fun and actually much easier to do!

I had to read up a little on them, there are tons of YouTube vids and blog posts on how to do it. Basically what I learned is make sure your base mani is at least a day old so you don’t pull it off when you remove the tape. Other than that, your imagination is the limit! There shouldn’t be any polish you can’t use. I’ve seen them over holos, under holos, glittered, creamed, shimmered, and any other finish you can find. Use regular straight edged scissors, curved/design-blade craft scissors, hole reinforcements, blue painters tape, pretty much anything that will stick to your nails that you can paint around/over and peel off!

I started with my base which in this case was a couple day old mani of SoFlaJo Tequila Sunrise and Pink Lady, with Wilde Irish Rose as the top layer. Yeah I know, weird combo, but I was just experimenting with combos of my polishes and that’s the one I still had on. It was actually very delicate looking! So on my left hand I cut the tape lengthwise in half and striped horizontially with Pink Lady and Shirley Temple. The right hand I cut the tape in thirds and striped vertically with Blue Martini and Golden Cadillac. Yeah they turned out ok. I did wear them for another couple of days. You can see with the left hand with the reds I didn’t tape it tight enough and some of the polish ran under the tape. I did get a bit better on the right hand and it didn’t bleed much under the tape.

Tape manis can be really simple like mine, or very intricate like some of the girls in the link below. Would you try one? Don’t be afraid. This is a LOT easier than water marbling. So what do you think our challenge will be next week? And btw, another group I’m in now wants to do a weekly nail challenge. So maybe I’ll get better at all these techniques. Wish me luck!
