Hallloween Swaps!

ATTN: PICTURE HEAVY

I’ve got to tell you, as if you didn’t already know,

I LOVE Halloween!

Last year I did a couple of Halloween swaps that were so much fun, so I was pretty excited to be involved in FOUR this year! And I got some really great stuff!

From my friend Rachel at Glam Polish in Australia (click her for her blog link btw) I got beautiful Ozotics, Vegemite (which I LOVE thanks to her always sending it to me), a boomerang, a couple of Koala bears, unshelled macadamia nuts (I’ve never seen them that way before) and a Picture Polish Dorothy for my hubby Joe (who collects anything Wizard of Oz)!

She also sent me one of her own handmade polishes! And it is beautiful!

My next swap was with my friend Nikki. She and I go back awhile and she lives near where I used to in Michigan. She is a huge penguin fanatic. Just look at this cute package!

She sent me two Sephora OPI polishes I’d been after as well as the darling black and orange Ty kitty. Also lots of goodies to use in my Halloween party theme!

I swapped as well with a fellow polish maker Kirsten from All That Glitters who sent me four of her fabulous polishes and a Starbucks gift card!

And here’s a really quick and uncleaned up mani because I wanted to see what my favorite one would look like on – Witch Craft!

I also did a Secret Halloween swap. From a nice gal named Andrea I got more polishes – China Glaze and my first Miso – and beauty goodies!

I’m already involved in two Secret Santa swaps as well as two other Christmas swaps. I am looking forward to sharing all those goodies with you next month, too!

Eradicate H8 Nov 8! Stop Bullying Now!

Bullying is not funny. It is not cool. It is not right. And more importantly, it is not okay.

Most of us are, thankfully, residents of countries that support tolerance and many of our families have settled in these places simply for that reason. Generations later, it is our responsibility to perpetuate that message of tolerance across our new social platforms, including the internet.

As members of the nail polish blogging community, we all share a love of beauty, color, and lacquer. Other than that, we are remarkably different: from our race to our religion to our hair color…even to our polish application techniques. To marginalize anyone because of those differences is completely unacceptable and today I take a stand against that. I refuse to allow other people’s view of “normal” dictate how I behave, believe, and blog.

In solidarity with a multitude of bloggers linked below, my purple manicure represents my proud commitment to the No H8 movement. Today, November 8, I dedicate my post to ending bullying of any kind and to encouraging diversity and imperfection among our colorful community.

(nails inc franklin’s row over cheyne walk. Sation Periwinkle Princess over unknown purple.)

“Bullying” is not a new concept. When I started school in the 1960’s I remember distinctly the one and only time I was bullied. Two of my little friends and I were walking in front of the school and an older boy (4th grade maybe) pushed us and I stepped in a dirty puddle of water with my new white lace anklets and little red buckle shoes. I was so mad that without thinking I turned and shoved him. I’m sure that was a surprise to him and I realized from then on my friends and I would not be bullied. I’ve always stood up for the ones that can’t and I’m doing it today as I stand in solidarity with many others who feel the same way.

Thank you for sharing the word with us! Click Here to view the Eradicate H8 blog.

la jolla Spa MD Vitaphenol Daily Defense Cream Review

I take pretty good care of my skin and I have been doing so for many years. When we are young we don’t even realize the damage that can happen to it and many girls don’t take very good care of theirs because of it. My mom still has a beautiful complexion at 89 years old, and she was very careful with her skin regimen and harped on me to do the same. I am thankful that she did. Of course I’m always looking for a miracle cure, without chemical injections or surgery, so I jumped at the chance to review Vitaphenol Daily Defense Cream.

I’ve been using it a almost two months now and haven’t used other moisturizers so that I could get a good idea of how well it works. Made with a variety of herbal and natural ingredients, I used one pump on my forehead and eyes, a second pump around my mouth and on my neck, and a third on my decollete. It is non-greasy and felt great on my skin, soaking in quickly and leaving my skin feeling refreshed, and although it is very lightly scented, I didn’t really even notice it had one. I like knowing that a product I’m using is not full of chemicals and is made in the USA.

The Daily Defense Cream that I used is a specially formulated medically compounded blend of Super-Antioxidants (Mangosteen – a rich source of xanthones, Pomegranate – to help give strength and support to skin, and Green and White Tea which reduce damage caused by sun and provide immunity boost), CoQ10 to visibly reduce fine lines and wrinkles, Ceramides (lipid molecules that boost the skin’s water-retention capacity), and Caffeine which immediately gives the appearance of tighter, firmer, younger skin.

I have fine lines as well as deeper smile lines. I used the Daily Defense Cream in the morning and evening after cleansing my face. I’m not sure two month’s use would be enough to see more than minor results, but I would think that with prolonged use it could continue to improve skin conditions it is recommended for such as hydration and dryness as well as correcting skin tone and redness. “In one particular study, more than half of the participants noticed a visible difference in skin texture, improvement in elasticity, increase in skin hydration and a decrease in fine lines and wrinkles after using Cellustructure Rejuvenating Serum (CRS) for a 3-month period.”

I like that it seems to pump out just the right amount for the area of my face that I am using it on. Its recommended to use under sunscreen and dries quickly and my regular powder makeup went on smooth. I’ve included pictures of before using it and after using it. You can see it plumps and gets rid of those fine lines around the eyes. I also have a lined scar under my eye I got when I was five years old. It helps to make it less noticeable as well! So yes I do like it. And I would recommend it.

This skin care line “is the first medically directed collection that has been formulated for ideal daily skin care regimens, as well as optimized care for skin undergoing treatment and procedures”. It was “created by world renowned dermatologist and cosmetic-surgeon Mitchel P. Goldman, MD”.

This line has four regimens depending on your skin type – Dry, Normal, Oily, Acne Prone – that include cleaners, toners, rejuvenating and hydrating products. All items can be purchased individually, but there are substantial price reductions when buying an entire system. Shipping is free with purchases above $50.

I was sent a full size sample of la jolla Spa MD Vitaphenol Daily Defense Cream for review. The 1.6 fl oz “Anti-Aging Deep Rehydration Treatment” sells for $95 at www.vitaphenol.com. I received this item at no cost to me and am providing an unbiased review of same.

Terrified Collection

Anybody that knows me will tell you without a doubt that Halloween is and always has been my favorite holiday. My earliest memories of it were as a small child and my dad dressing up with me to take me trick-or-treating. When I got older we always had a party with cider, warm cinnamon donuts and apple dunking with my friends. One year we were visiting my grandparents and my mean boy cousins made me walk through a graveyard with them if I wanted to trick-or-treat. Even so, I will always cherish these memories.

Goodbye Spring Flowers – Hello Fall Colors!

Just a quick THANK YOU! to everybody for their purchases from the now retired Spring Flowers Collection. It was a lot of fun seeing those perky bright colors after the dark winter.

But keep an eye out for some more exciting news. Autumn is just around the corner and with it will be a new line with some pretty awesome polishes and textures, if I do say so myself! Are you excited? I AM!

Essie Brings Out the Beach Bum in Me!

I’ve lived in South Florida for over a dozen years now, and visited it yearly or as often as possible since my first trip here when I was 16. I’ve always loved the blue waters and white sandy beaches. My last trip back to visit my family in Indiana and Michigan was at Thanksgiving in 2001. Living anywhere but walking distance to the beach doesn’t make sense to me, why else would I want to live in Florida? LOL

Anyway – I’m not a big Essie wearer but I came across Beach Bum Blu this summer at my local nail supply. I already had NYX Girls Maven NGP161 I’d picked up earlier this year at a small beauty supply. They are the perfect combination and both wore extremely well.

What is your favorite blue combo?

I Love a Holo

A few months ago I blogged about a swap I had with a lovely Brazilian girl. She sent me some polishes by Ellen Gold that are a lovely holo. I finally wore my first one. I have way too many untried I’m trying to work my way through and thought this would be perfect to go with that gold pedi I just posted about!

In my birthday group I was gifted an Orly polish, Crawford’s Wine. It is beautiful! It was part of the Valentine’s Day Collection a couple of years ago. Since I don’t buy a lot of Orly (my helmer has less than a half drawer full), I don’t follow their releases as well as maybe I should because the ones I’ve gotten as gifts or picked up on sale at Sally are gorgeous and a dream to apply. This one is no exception. I applied one nice coat as my undies over my base. Since I knew I’d be topping it I didn’t necessarily do the best job on the base. 🙁

This is a photo of Ellen Gold Holo Vermelho. It actually is very dull without a topcoat. I used my normal Sally Hansen Clear 110. I wore this mani all week and only had minimal tip wear.

If you get the chance to pick up any of the Ellen Gold holos – go for it. This is a spectacular color, and the only reason I put undies with it was because it’s not a polish I can just go down to the store and pick up if I run out and I don’t want to do that! LOL

Even in the shade it’s a good looking holo! I hope you have the chance to get some of these and try them for yourself. 🙂

Bling Bling Mani

Sally Beauty is well known for their clearance sales. But when I shop I usually wait till the big sales when all clearance goes to an additional 50% off. Oh yeah, they had one just last weekend and I picked up way too much stuff, but it was hard to resist when I was paying around $2 a bottle for Orly and China Glaze. It’s quite a savings. And it was old collections that they can’t be bothered with or aren’t made anymore.

So I want to show you a mani I did with two of the colors I picked up from the sale. I really should say a pedi, please don’t squeal if you don’t like toes. I’ll try not to be offensive! 🙂

I’ve been finding myself drawn to golden polishes more and more. I spotted Orly Glitz on the sale table and immediately grabbed it. My bottle simply says Glitz, but I think it’s called Glitz & Glamour from the 2010 Holiday collection, while Glitz is from their permanent collection. So I am confused by that one and don’t really know for sure. Just suffice it to say if you come across either – BUY it! This is just one coat of Glitz as my base color.

And the layering polish is China Glaze Electrify from the Hunger Games (nope never read it or saw it) Collection. I love the red and gold glitter in this one. And these two polishes together do not disappoint. My toes look like they glow. Since I’m a South Florida girl and nearly live in open toed shoes, I’ve had a lot of excitement from this combo when people see my toes! I love them together and how they really bring out the bling in each other. I can’t wait to try them as a mani when I have something happening where I really want to draw attention to me! Hahahaha

Hope I didn’t scare you off too bad with a toe picture. If you already own these polishes try putting them together and let me know how you like the combination!

Spring Flowers Collex Retires July 31

The end is near for discovering the beauty of my Spring Flowers collection. All six polishes will be retired July 31. 5ml bottles are $5, 15ml bottles are $10. The two in lowest supply are Bluebelle and Wilde Irish Rose.

New Revlon Moon Candy Nail Polish with Swatches

ATTN: VERY Picture Heavy!

Friday while I was at Walgreen looking for the new WnW Saved by the Nail collection (which I didn’t find), I came across one I’ve been waiting several months to see – Revlon Moon Candy duos. I shop (stalk?) that store often for polish so the cosmetic mgr and I always compare manis and talk lacquer. She said they just put the display out the night before so I was able to raid it for one of each color. And I haven’t bought hardly any polish in months, so the eight $1 coupons she gave me was also a nice little bump to get me to buy the whole set! If you have OCD let me apologize now for the way I took them out of the rack – sorry! :{

Yeah I did a skittle mani last night with them. Some are AH-Mazing. Some are ok. The undies are funny ’cause some are 1 coaters, others 2. Same with the Flakies so I went ahead with 2 on each. Slow drying but some are oh so pretty! I also had to use a coat of Gelous over my usual TC. The Flakies weren’t overly rough but I wanted to smooth them out entirely. (Posche basecoat and SH Insta-Dry 110 Clear for topcoat.)

I wouldn’t go with some of the bases they did, but I’m showing them in their combinations. Also note that none of the bases have names! Some of these were easier to photograph than others, even after  up to and over 20 attempts each! Also note that some of the labels are peeling (makes for terrible pix IMO) because there are “directions” on the back that you pull the label off to read. I wanted to show you exactly what my bottles looked like while I was using them, but I will be putting a piece of tape over each one to keep them from fraying even worse!

Let’s start with Satellite. The base is a wine red in my opinion. This combination works pretty well together. In the store I was afraid the base was brown, and that’s not a color I wear, so I was pleasantly surprised on this one. The base on this was 2 coats.

This is the other pinky-peachy flakie in the set, Supernova. I don’t know exactly what I was expecting, but I don’t think it was this. Worn over Revlon’s choice of grey one-coat base, I think it really detracts from what this one could be. I’ll definitely being trying this one again over something else!

Cosmic reminds me of camoflouge. This dark olive green base was also a 2-coater. I like this one and they work well together too.

This is a gorgeous combination that I would wear again! Galactic is over a really deep navy blue base and the flakies come out teal colored on the nail. One coat of underwear was all this one took.

Moondust really fooled me! It’s gorgeous blue flakies on the nail. It’s over a one-coat black base. I want to try this one over other colors!

Milky Way was my disappointment. Look at how awesome it is in the bottle. It just didn’t transcend that way on the nail. It may have been because Revlon chose to go with a deep grey for underwear, and it just sits there. I’m pretty sure this one would pop with the right base color. Just one coat for the base on this one, too.

Being that I’m a purple girl, I thought Orbit was going to be THE one for me. It is beautiful, but I really had to work at it to get the flakies out of the bottle. This one was the reason I decided to use two applications of flakies on each nail. I had to shake it well and stir the brush around inside of it to pick up the particles. It is pretty on though, over one coat of purple base.

Universe also had me fooled from the start. Again in the store the base looked brown. But I would call it a deep brick red and it’s really pretty. The flakies on this one work great. The base was one coat.

And last night I was posting these to my facebook page so you could get a quick sampling of them. So here they are in case you’re not following my page – but you should be! The link is up there ^^. 🙂

I think these were pretty expensive and I wouldn’t have bought them all if it wasn’t for the discounts I got at the store because I actually did only pick up half of them till I was told I could use the coupons at the counter for each one. I wish CVS had a cosmetic counter since the stores don’t carry all the same brands (we don’t have Rite-Aid) in South Florida.

So – do you want to run right out and buy them all? Or are there only certain ones you’re interested in? The bottle total weight is .26Fl Oz/7.68ml. How does that compare to the price of indies in your opinion?

Spring Flowers Collection to be Discontinued July 31

All good things must come to an end. And with summer in full swing it’s time to say good-bye to my Spring Flowers Collection. Bluebelle and Wilde Irish Rose are already in very limited supply and all colors will be gone forever after the end of July.

Orders will be filled first come, first served. Click on my Shop Tab at the top and click on Spring Flowers for ordering. Thank you! 🙂

Here’s just a fun mani I did early in the week with China Glaze and Orly Neons (Sun-Kissed – index, Under the Boardwalk – middle, I’m with the Lifeguard – ring, Melt Your Popsicle – pinkie, Splish Splash – thumb). Then applied some of the polishes from the Spring Flowers Collection over them (Buttercup – index, Wilde Irish Rose middle, Fields of Clover – ring, Orange Blossom Special – pinkie, Bluebelle – thumb). Although it’s extremely hard to capture them, BlueBelle and Wild Irish Rose have duo qualities in the right light. (Dewdrop is on my toes over Claire’s (Color Club) Starstuck Cosmic, but I didn’t think you wanted to see that! LOL)

Ulta Benefit Birthday Brow Bar & Bonus Tweezerman Review

Note: Picture Heavy

I’m pretty excited to tell you I was accepted into the Tweezerman Ambassador program in May. Since my blog focuses on health, beauty and fitness, and they make so many great products, I wasn’t exactly sure what they’d be sending. So I can tell you I was really happy to receive their signature Tweezerman kit filled with brow and eye products.

As a natural blonde I have been extremely lucky to have been blessed with very light colored arm, leg and facial hair. So my eyebrows haven’t been a huge issue with me, but I’ve never had ones that I thought were shaped terribly well. Enter my birthday. And the free Birthday Benefit Brow Bar at my local Ulta. And my Tweezerman Brow kit. Can you see where this is going?

I had Lunch and fitness classes to teach just around the corner so I got an early afternoon appointment. I arrived in plenty of time for the 1:40 festivities. And Mehgan was ready for me. I certainly picked her brain as we sat down to do my brow-acure! She said most people never ask any questions and she was more than happy to comment on anything I asked!

First up. Ulta uses only Tweezerman products at their Brow Bar. They love the professional feel of their line and we discussed what many of them were for and how to use them correctly. They do not use the very pointed tweezers at the store because they are working so near the eyes (obviously) that they don’t want the liability in using such a product on the public. But Mehgan said at home THAT is her favorite tweezer. It gets in tight and she loves the ability to get such a clean pluck!

The Brow Bar uses waxing and plucking so there were a lot of tools we used. First she started out with the brush to brush my brows and the small scissors to lightly trim any hairs that were too long. There were just a tiny few. She said NEVER pluck them out because they will leave a hole where the follicle was and could leave a hole in the brow line. OK, too late on that one. I did have one long thick hair one time in my brow that I did yank out. Stupid move and I know better now. But she looked and said it didn’t cause any serious damage. Whew! So she used the little brush to brush up and away from my brow line. Don’t brush with the curve of the brush, that’s not how it’s intended to be used.

She then took a long thin waxing stick and made three points around my brow to outline it’s curve. She held it first directly at the nose and up the brow and made a tiny dot with a brow pencil. Then she held it midway at my nostril and up to the midpoint of my brow. Lastly was at the outside base of my nose to the outside of my brow. She repeated it on the other side. Since I don’t have big thick brows (and never did), there wasn’t a lot to work with to make those dramatic arching brows many women have. And she had said that the way I had been tweezing had caused me to have a “comma”, which I had to totally agree with. But she said it was all good and she cleaned it up with short little strokes of wax and quick yanks from the little muslin strips she had.

Meghan used sharp quick little plucks to clean-up above and below the brow after waxing. I wish I could do it that fast and painless to myself. I’m gonna practice! LOL And said the assortment of tweezers in my kit was a great way to get a comfortable fit for the type of instrument I would feel best using. There’s no wrong or right tweezer, only the one that works best for you.

She then used a cooling gel on my brow (aloe would work if you have no allergies to it) and massaged my brow. Now THAT was worth the whole waxing and plucking in my opinion! And touched me up with a bit of concealer to erase the redness. Then she cleaned up the tools with alcohol and put them back in the case I had brought them in.

We used the BrowMousse, a kind of setting gel to keep my brows in place. She stroked it on lightly and quickly and it never felt like I was wearing anything. I was worried I was going to have a heavy feeling over my eyes. Nope, not at all. Then she pulled out the Lashcomb and flipped open the top and said “This is the BEST lash comb you can find. See these metal teeth? They work so well to separate your lashes. You’ll never use one of those plastic combs again!”

And she also reminded me that you can return your tweezers to Tweezerman for free sharpening for as long as they can still be resharpened! Click here for details. So it’s always a good idea to have an extra if one is out for repairs.

Because I’m so blonde she thought the Brow Definer was a little too dark for me. But she used the Highlighter to create luminosity and brighten the area under my brow. I was very satisfied with the effect of everything we had done. And I got quite a brow education from a trained and talented esthetician.

After I was through I had to take a swing through Ulta, which is one of my favorite beauty supply stores. I found Tweezerman products in more than one location in the store. Their products are available in the time honored silver as well as fun designs and colors like one of the tweezers that was included for my review in what I would call a mini. It came in a plastic carrying tube which keeps it safe in my purse.

I am excited that Tweezerman gave me this opportunity to review their quality products. And to Ulta for allowing me to have the free brow done while learning how to actually use the tools correctly. Even though they provided the Brow Kit free of charge, all views and insights are my own opinion.

Happy Birthday to Meeeee! :)

NOTE: Picture Heavy!

Oh yes, I’m still getting those fabulous, fun birthday gifts from my birthday club! Here’s the first post I put up about it in case you missed my debut video! I wanted to make another video, but Joe and I have been fighting these nasty colds for over a week now that seem to be plaguing the entire country. So last night I broke down and opened a few more of my gifts, with pictures only! I want to share them with you because I got some gorgeous polishes that I haven’t seen before, as well as some amazing indies for me to add to my small but growing collection by these talented ladies!

This gift actually came early in the month and I have NO idea why I didn’t already show it. My friend Nikki and I met very early in the nail polish community. We have been doing a very good job (too good maybe) of enabling each other with some marvelous collections ever since! When we found out we were in the same birthday club, it was “icing on the cake” as they say! I actually already sent her gift, even though her birthday isn’t for a few more months, because I had found the Color Club Backstage Pass set at Ross and didn’t want her to miss out on it, knowing how much she wanted it. Wait till her real birthday month comes! Shhhh – don’t spoil the surprise and tell her that she’s getting something else! LOL So on to what she got me! I had been longing for the CC Take Wing collection, but hadn’t found it around here. So what do you think she sent me? Yeppers – and what do you think I am wearing right now? You’re really good at this game, aren’t you?! And of course I got CHOCOLATE!!!!

And here’s what they look like on!

And a warning! TOES!!!! LOL And NOT the best pedi at that! 🙁

From Carrie I got Moar Chocolate!

See another cute PostCard? We were supposed to all be including one from our city or region for each gift. I’ve gotten some really nice ones that I’ve put up over my desk. Now this bridge, let me tell you, is one of the scariest I’ve EVER driven across. Actually I was a passenger and Joe drove across it. I don’t know that I could drive it. WOW – I ride 7-mile down in the Keys on my Harley all the time with no problem, but this one scared the shit outta me!!! LOL And Carrie tells me she drives it in the middle of the night to clear her head! OMG – She’s crazier than me!!!

And I also got Pure Ice Busted (PURPLE!!). Which is awesome because WalMart is really far from me and I don’t ever go there anyway. Suffice it to say I don’t like their policies! I love coffee, especially Starbucks. I also got a really neat little red lipstick case. I’ve had them in the past but have long since lost or ruined them, so this was a neat little treat to get! And a Cheshire Cat bracelet. Now isn’t that the cutest little thing?! But the piece de resistance was Carrie’s own Sassy Lacquer Pegasus Jizz! It’s beautiful and I can’t wait to try it and write a review for all of you. I’ve seen other reviews on it already, and it is a highly acclaimed polish in them! Thank you Carrie for sending me my own special bottle of Jizz! LMAO

Next up Candice went crazy (well she says her hubby did) buying me a huge tub of chocolate covered espresso beans! Now ask a coffe addicted chocoholic if it gets any better than this?! LOL And YES, they are Gooooood!! This was such a fun box to open because she had used BIG cotton balls for the packing and tons of fuzzy little craft balls that my cats just go wild over. When I first opened the box I saw a few of the fuzzies, but wait till you see the picture where I dumped it out!

Here it is dumped out on the couch. You can see all the goodies that came tumbling out!

Inside this fun box was a big Sally Hansen file, a bottle of JR Watkins Hand and Body Lotion (I love that stuff!) and the funniest card (Your brain on birthday cake!). She also found a set of Dragon nail transfers. They are unique and I can’t wait to use them. We want to do a bike trip soon, I’m gonna make sure I wear them when we do. (Take a look at that picture in my header. I have the dragon on both sides of my tank!) AND, two Essence Toppers that I haven’t even seen in stores! Glorious Aquarius in an aquatic blue. And Its Purplicious in my favorite – PURPLE!!! As soon as I saw them last night I KNEW I was going to be using them next – OVER the current mani I’m wearing. Why can’t we leave well enough alone?!

And one more box last night – from Kelly. This one wowed me! First, it was a Chocolate Box!!

But when I started opening those little bubble pillows I was astounded at her generosity! She included an OPI Nic’s Sticks Silver-Ella. Do you know how hard those are to find? A gorgeous silver holo I can’t wait to try. Then there was the large bottle of NYX Beach Glitter (NPS218). I have some NYX but they are much smaller bottles and I had never seen this one before. And I got indies! By three lovely ladies that I didn’t already own any by! But now I do! I can’t wait to try them. Ursula is a gorgeous purple glitter from one of those crazy Disney Villians (and all my girls know how much I love Disney) from Once Upon a Polish. The beautiful Basket Grass that I’ve heard so much about and agree it is stunning from Pretty & Polished. And the lovely color changing Aurora Borealis from Dollish Polish. It looks very purpley in the bottle and I can’t wait to try THAT! Last but not least is a Girl Scout Lip Smacker in Coconut Caramel Stripe which I think I’m just gonna eat straight outta the tube! LOL

These have been some amazing gifts and I’m excited that these girls are so thoughtful and also a bunch of mind readers! Chocolate, coffee, indies, holos, glitters, well thank you very much I will gladly accept them all with a HUGE smile on face. And all the charities that have had contributions made to them in my name has filled my heart with joy. This is a wonderful group of girls to be in a birthday club with and I thank them so much for being friends!

So tomorrow is my real birthday (May 29) and my little bro’s birthday is the next day! But I’ve got 10 years on the little monster! Wanna see a pic of us waaaaaay back when?!?! Ok well here it is anyway!

That’s also our older sis and our dad. I can’t believe this picture was taken back in the 70s. Man it seems like it could have been just yesterday. Time sure flies. I hope you are enjoying sharing my birthday month with me! There will be more to come! And since today is Memorial Day, I hope you’ve enjoyed it with your family and thought of a service man who has protected our freedoms. Here’s one more picture I’m sharing, of my Mom and her brother my Uncle Eddie, who was a pilot during WWII.

Thanks for taking a few minutes to let me share with you! 🙂

MyGlam Beauty Bag – Yes I Did!

Aye yi yi! Please don’t throw anything at me. Yes I did resubscribe to MyGlam. I had canceled it after the previous month, but of course they would make it a good one! So I resubmitted my name for the May bag and I got it! And you know, it isn’t too bad of a bag. It’s always going to be hit or miss, but for $10 I think I’m staying on the gambling train!

In a nutshell, I got a cosmetic bag. Ha ha, you’re saying you already guessed that? It’s cute aqua with pink lipstick kisses on it. I’ve heard some people complain about the smell emitted from these bags, but Joe says I have the nose of a bloodhound, and I’ve yet to be offended by any odor from them.

I got two more beauty brushes. The final they will be sending for the set. This time I got the signature pink MyGlam Concealer Brush and Defining Eyeliner Brush. They are both nice. I’m sure I will be using all of these brushes soon. I have a couple of sets by other companies but I do like to play around with all of them to see if there are differences in details.

There was also a sample of Philosophy Love Sweet Love fragrance. I don’t wear the brand and this is definitely not a fragrance I would wear. It will make a nice little added treat in a swap gift. I just hope the recipient likes it!

From Studio Gear there was a nice lipstick. I have heard some of the girls didn’t like the color they received. But I have to say – I love the color I got! It is a color I definitely will wear! (Kind of makes up for that orange Hot Topic nail polish they sent a couple of months ago that I may or may not wear around Halloween!) And it’s called “Romance”. Awwww

Lastly this bag contained Miss Beauty Nail Bling nail decals. They are pink hearts. They look like the light box game my little brother had that you put pegs in and it lit up from behind. I actually haven’t ever worn nail decals! I thought it was kind of cute that this month all my gifts followed the theme “love is in the air” so closely. But it seems like a better theme for February. Ahhhh what do I know? 🙂

This is your link: MyGlam if you want to get on the MyGlam bandwagon. I don’t get any points or anything for signing you up. You will probably have to sign up for a waiting list. But hey, it’s $10 and that’s a pretty good bet!

A Month of Birthdays

A Month of Birthdays

May is my Birthday month, and I’m in a birthday group on Facebook. I know, how many times am I’m going to tell you I’m in some fb group? Well it seems to be the social media of choice. I’m not a huge fan of Zuck and all the things he’s done to his baby, but I find it is the best place to keep in contact with your friends and business associates.

You may recall from a previous exchange post that I requested a donation be made in my name to a favorite animal charity. I just have way too much stuff. I imagine most of us do. It’s hard to not look at pretty things and want them, but I just don’t really need them.

Amanda contributed to my favorite charity – Abandoned Pet Rescue. They are a no-kill shelter here in Fort Lauderdale. Joe and I host an annual Halloween event with all donations given to them. This is their very welcoming entrance that was painted entirely by donation.

Yezenia donated to the ASPCA. This is the adorable internet card they sent me!

Amber made a donation to her favorite animal charity Wildlife Sanctuary of Northwest Florida. They provide care to injured or orphaned indigenous wildlife. Look at these cute little faces!

Ours is an international group and I’ve received some really nice nail polishes as well! And CANDY. Lots and lots of CHOCOLATE candy! Don’t worry, I’ll be celebrating all month with my wonderful group of friends. There will be more posts to come with some very cool pictures and maybe even a video or two!

So do you contribute time or money to charity? They always need help. My favorites are the animals, since they really have no way to take care of themselves without our help. What is your favorite charity?

Mother’s Day Tribute to My Mom

NOTE: Very Picture Heavy!

A funny thing happened during the last 50 years. I grew up. That wild child with the Harley who traveled the country and lived on a sailboat and did everything she wanted, is the now responsible adult.

Last year I realized my mom was suffering from dementia, and as her power of attorney I moved her into assisted living for her own safety. But I was so depressed everytime I visited her and I knew that her mental health was declining rapidly as well. In November Joe and I moved Mom and her dog ShaSha in with us. One month ago today I found her on her bathroom floor suffering from a stroke. The paramedics arrived almost immediately but a lot of damage had already been done. She is now living permanently in a nursing home that is 10 minutes from our home. Those of you that are friends on my personal facebook page have watched me fall apart and pick myself back up again as I make sure Mom is well cared for. We just got home from spending the afternoon with her and having a Papa John’s Chicken Cordon Bleu pizza delivered for our “Mother’s Day Picnic” as she was telling everyone there! So her spirits are good and she can talk ok, but her 88-year old body is ravaged from the pain and she sits in a wheelchair during the day. But I know she is well cared for and she is comfortable, and that’s the best I can hope for now.

I thought you’d enjoy seeing a glimpse of Mom’s wonderful life. She was a vibrant woman who enjoyed life and lived comfortably but frugally, having been born during the depression. She grew up in Iowa with 2 sisters and a brother. This is the earliest picture I have of Mom. I know where I get my love for cats!

This picture is mom as a little girl with her older sister and brother. Aunt Helen is on the left and Uncle Eddie is on the right. My grandparents are behind Mom.

I’m not sure when this was taken but I’m guessing she was in her 20’s. She was a beauty!

This is a great picture of Mom with her parents, her older brother and sister Eddie and Helen, and baby sister on the far right, Ferne.

OK I have to show this one. I always loved it! It’s at Mom and Dad’s wedding! How cute are they?!

This is another picture I just love! This is my older sister Sandie, Mom, Dad, me and Dad’s drums on the left behind Sandie. My folks were musicians and we had a parade of people in and out of our house when I was growing up playing jam sessions with them. It was pretty awesome. There were drums, guitars, organs, and all kinds of percussion, string and wind instruments around our house.

Here’s a picture of her with band leader Ralph Marterie in 1954. Sexy lady for sure!

Mom quit school during WWII and worked the factories like many other women of her generation. She returned to high school night classes and graduated with her diploma from the same high school I did 10 years after I graduated. I am so proud of her for this accomplishment!

Mom, my sister Sandie, and me at Sandie’s son’s wedding in 1986.

Mom, Sandie, Sandie’s son Scott and Scott’s son, Michael in 1988. Four generations!

Celebrating Mom’s birthday 2003.

Mom, Joe and me at our wedding.

Mother’s Day 2006.

Last year at assisted living with Mom and ShaSha.

Mom living with us and “working” (playing games) on the computer. She’s really concentrating! LOL

And doing “slave labor” at our house!

Pooped out after a long day. Her ShaSha on the left and Friday cuddled on her lap!

At Ulta! We used to go there every couple of months for facials and hair cuts!

Mom the day after her stroke, smiling for the camera (I wanted my sis and bil to see she was ok).

After moving to the nursing home and having ShaSha visit her for the first time.

My friend Lisa’s husband lives at the same nursing home Mom is at. She sometimes brings their dog to visit. Handsome is a HUGE Great Dane saying HI to Mom!

Last week ShaSha and me visiting again.

And a little video at the Mother’s Day Happy Hour on Friday!

Mom shares a room with a sweet lady named Alice. Mom’s name is Bea. They’ve already declared themselves A&B to everybody! They sit at the same table in the dining room and you’d better not split them up! It’s a relief to see Mom is getting along better. I’ve been a wreck trying to make sure she is cared for. I think things will be ok. Thank you for letting me share my memories of Mom with you.

Happy Mother’s Day to everyone, whether you have real babies or fur babies or both!

XO Jody

Did You Know You Really Do Use Scotch Tape?

Last week I posted about a facebook group I’m in doing a weekly mani now, with links to all those that participated. This week’s challenge was to do a “Tape Mani”. I keep seeing all their eBay buys for the skinny little tapes and I’ve never done a tape mani, so I jokingly asked if I could use Scotch tape. Jeez, I didn’t know that’s what they all were using when they talk about it! Smile

Since I don’t usually have the time to go all out on manis I thought it would be fun to do these if I could do them quickly and not really worry about how great they looked or how long I’d wear them beyond picture taking for the blog. But like last week’s Water Marble Mani, this one was quite fun and actually much easier to do!

I had to read up a little on them, there are tons of YouTube vids and blog posts on how to do it. Basically what I learned is make sure your base mani is at least a day old so you don’t pull it off when you remove the tape. Other than that, your imagination is the limit! There shouldn’t be any polish you can’t use. I’ve seen them over holos, under holos, glittered, creamed, shimmered, and any other finish you can find. Use regular straight edged scissors, curved/design-blade craft scissors, hole reinforcements, blue painters tape, pretty much anything that will stick to your nails that you can paint around/over and peel off!

I started with my base which in this case was a couple day old mani of SoFlaJo Tequila Sunrise and Pink Lady, with Wilde Irish Rose as the top layer. Yeah I know, weird combo, but I was just experimenting with combos of my polishes and that’s the one I still had on. It was actually very delicate looking! So on my left hand I cut the tape lengthwise in half and striped horizontially with Pink Lady and Shirley Temple. The right hand I cut the tape in thirds and striped vertically with Blue Martini and Golden Cadillac. Yeah they turned out ok. I did wear them for another couple of days. You can see with the left hand with the reds I didn’t tape it tight enough and some of the polish ran under the tape. I did get a bit better on the right hand and it didn’t bleed much under the tape.

Tape manis can be really simple like mine, or very intricate like some of the girls in the link below. Would you try one? Don’t be afraid. This is a LOT easier than water marbling. So what do you think our challenge will be next week? And btw, another group I’m in now wants to do a weekly nail challenge. So maybe I’ll get better at all these techniques. Wish me luck!

LMAO My First Water Marble!

OMG! I’m in a group on Facebook that wanted to have a Water Marble Monday blog today, so of course I thought, why not? I’ve always wanted to try it. Well, Idk if I’ll be trying it again. What a funny and fun time I had, tho. I first tried using polishes that were too shimmery and glittery. Altho they looked great in the water dispersing like they do, they don’t make for a good water marble. At least not till I’m better at it and know what I’m doing. I read a lot of blogs and watched a lot of vids trying to figure out my best plan of attack. I saw China Glaze, Zoya, and Sally Hansen among others mentioned as being good choices. Since I figured I’d be making a mess (and I did), I went with my cheapest option – Sally Hansen. Below are my photos. Please feel free to join me in LMAO!!

I started off here with Shirley Temple from my new Happy Hour Collection.

Then that beautiful little girl met the Monster! hahaha

One suggestion I liked and did was to put cuticle oil on my finger up to my first knuckle and under my nail. It was a quick swipe so it used very little product. I also had a small alcohol wipe I used to wipe each nail just before I took the plunge. The cuticle oil works great! I was able to wipe the polish off with a cotton pad quite easily. The fingers that still have polish on them are ones I didn’t get to fast enough, but the polish came off really quickly with my fave Zoya Remove+. Another tip I learned after I did it is to also put a dab of oil on the stir stick (I used a toothpick). That would probably help IMO!

And the final picture is my Helmer drawer full of Sally Hansen’s I have to chose from!

OK so now that you’ve seen that I can do it, I did get better by the end with my thumb, what do ya think? Would you try it? You know you want to! DO IT!! Smile And here are the group’s Water Marbles!

Kids with Disabilities Polish/Makeup Charity Drive

Many of you may follow Megan’s blog Painting Rainbows. She is doing an internship right now working with children with disabilities. I’ve known Megan for quite some time and this is a subject that is dear to my heart. Growing up, my best girlfriend’s older brother was severely disabled and I know how much heartache and hardship the family went through. It was a real eye opener as a little kid to be around this and because of it I have a very big soft spot for wanting to help Megan out. I asked her if I could also send Makeup and she lit up telling me that they do indeed want NEW only Makeup for prom that is coming up. The polishes can be used but please make sure you send only new makeup if you plan to include that, too.

306640_3649995449977_1277214035_3593151_980716502_n

I have a lot of used polishes that I won’t use. So I sent all of them. I also have a lot of new Nick’s Sticks that I thought would be good for the kids that could handle them could use to paint their own nails. Again Megan lit up when she found out I was sending those and new Sally Hansen Chrome Pens. She said they could use an adapter so that the kids could handle them and use them themselves. How awesome! I also sent a lot of eyeshadows that I had which hadn’t been used (I’m a sucker for eye makeup).

I ended up using two of the USPS priority padded envelopes. It was cheaper doing that then sending a medium rate box! I also taped the envelopes up really well. One time I sent a padded envelope to someone and all the polish was gone but all the candy and note was there. So to avoid that from now on I always TAPE TAPE TAPE!!! LOL

If you would like to send packages to Megan, you can click here to go directly to her blog, or you can email her at itsrainingstars13@hotmail.com  to contact her about the polish you want to send and get her address. Please do not send the polish to me! LOL

OK, there you have it! Doing a good deed and getting rid of polishes you won’t use! What’s better than that?!

Love that International Swap!

IMG_4800new

I was involved with two international swaps last month and they were both so amazing! One was from Brazil (oolala) and the other was from the UK (yummy). Both ladies are super super super(!) sweet and are two of the best swappers I’ve ever met. Even though I sent what they asked for I feel that my boxes to them were so inadequatre compared to what I received from them! I’m waiting to hear back from both of them because I cannot believe that my boxes didn’t get to them yet. In both swaps we each shipped to each other on the same day. I just hope they are as happy with what they got as I am with what I got. If they aren’t, trust me I have no problem sending them moar! LOL

IMG_4795new  IMG_4797new  IMG_4788new  IMG_4789new  IMG_4794new

So from Alice in the UK, and what started our whole swap was that awesome Max Factor Fantasy Fire! When I asked her what she would like and sent her my swap list, she said “All of it” (haha not quite), so I had to get busy finding other things I’d like to get from her. Since I’m not extremely familiar with UK brands except the MF, Gosh and Models Own, she gave me some ideas and what great ones they were! I also got MF Graffiti, Blue Odyssey, and Moon Dust; Models Own Gold Rush and Mixed Up; 17 Fury, Revenge, Sulk; Gosh Purple Heart, and she gifted me with George U the Sea and MUA Shade 10. Everything is so rich and gorgeous looking. From looking at all this it’s pretty obvious I’m not really into cremes! Yes the Max Factor are little, you can see all four of them in my hand.

IMG_0018new    IMG_0020new IMG_0023new    IMG_0021new

My swap from Brazil was already predetermined on the Hits! Heck yeah I knew I wanted some of those after seeing everybody’s beautiful swatches all over the internet! Glitter Forte, Unconventional, Artsy, Cutie Pie, Hestia, Apolo, Dionisio, Hefesto, Atena, and Zeus. What a gorgeous selection of polishes they are! But wait, there’s more! Ludurana Aurora Boreal; Rivka Carrie and Ellen Gold Cinza Chumbo (I love that name!), Prata, Roxo, Vermelho, and Rosa. She also got me 2 lovely bracelets, a convertible shopping bag and since I already carry several on my purse you’d think she read my mind! Carolina also gave me darling little note cards, emery boards (with cats and cheeta prints), and the neatest stamping plate with hearts, cats, teddys, dogs, bunnies, and other cute symbols on it.

These girls really made my collections come alive! I don’t know that I’m really a person with lots of lemmings, but if I was, they certainly filled those spots! And I also got a bottle of Savvy polish (from Sally’s) that my good friend Jane gave me when we went out to dinner the other night. She said, Well it was purple and all the Savvy are now 99c, so I bought them for you, my daughters, myself. Hmmmm Jody, now I’m starting to sound like you! LOL Yep, we converted another one ladies! Welcome to our Polish Kingdom, right?

IMG_0016new

All of the international polishes were pretty small actually! The smallest were the Max Factor which are 4.5ml. The rest ranged in size from 6ml for The Hits, MUA, and maybe George to 8ml for 17, Ludurana, and Gosh. The largest were the Rivka at 10ml, Ellen Gold at 12ml, and Models Own at 14ml.

So what swaps have you done lately? For a couple of international ones (I have done two with Australia previously – oh yeah – Glitter Gals and Ozotics), I am really beyond words at how gorgeous their polishes are. Who is with me in thinking US makers need to step up their game?

My Secret Bunny Loves Me!

I am in a Facebook group that did a Secret Bunny swap (like Secret Santa). I already have so many polishes that I couldn’t think of a whole lot that I needed. I really got into the swap so I could gift some things and fill some lemmings that another might have. But as fate would have it, the wonderful gal that got me knows how much of an animal lover I am, and is one herself. We both have cats and we’ve talked to each other about how much joy they bring to our lives and what excellent companions they are.

One of our cats, Sgt Joe Friday

The organizer of the swap got us all to join elfster.com. It’s a pretty cool site that you can input things you want for gifts and your family and friends can look at it and get you stuff you actually want on your birthday and holidays! LOL I entered that I didn’t need anything, and to please make a donation in my name to your favorite pet charity.

What's in the bag? There's some bubblewrap!

There's some bubblewrap!

When I got my swap package it is was nice and compact. So I was thinking to myself, Yes, she didn’t get me a bunch of stuff. When I opened it there was one of my favorite things ` CHOCOLATE! Haha, I think that she had asked me a question about my snacking and I said I love chocolate, actually milk chocolate. She did a fine job of filling up the bag with some real winners including Lindt and M&Ms. Yummmm But there was even more goodness in that swap bag! Some very nice Milani polishes that I didn’t have, and Sinful Colors Green Ocean, which I’ve been lusting after for over two years! Why has it never made it to Fort Lauderdale? I guess I lamented about it enough because she knew I wanted it and sure enough, I now own my very own bottle!

Oooooo pretty polishes!!

So yes I did very well from my Secret Bunny. But there was one more thing I was to find. When I opened the adorable card, there inside was a note thanking her for the donation to Cat’s Cradle pet rescue. I was bawling by the time I got done reading the note! She touched my heart and made me so happy for doing that. Our four cats are all rescues, so I know how much the shelters need revenue. They certainly need it more than I need a dozen new polishes! I want to thank my friend and Secret Bunny Michele for being such a sweet soul and giving, what I expect knowing her, was a very generous donation to them. And also to let you know that yes, I’ve eaten most of the chocolate WITHOUT sharing it! hahaha And I’m going to be wearing one of my new polishes this week for Easter! YAY

So what do you think about how very special my Secret Bunny swap haul was?

MyGlam Glam Bag for March

So I got the March MyGlam Glam Bag, and after three months of receiving them, I’m just not feeling it. I know it’s just $10 and it includes both full and sample sizes, but I can see the full sizes going by the wayside pretty quickly. And so far there really hasn’t been anything I’ve received that I would go right out and buy.

The past two months included samples from: Premier Dead Sea who I’ve seen in kiosks at the mall and gotten a “facial” from them. They use heavy selling tactics and their products are way too pricey. The Keracolor Leave-In Treatment left my long hair sticky feeling. Many other samples were very tiny and hardly able to be used for a single use.

IMG_4727

The full size products have included two masks from Freeman. The Contour Brush is nice, but I have dozens of brushes already and didn’t find theirs to be the end-all they claim. And I’m not sure if the Murad Bronzing Boost is full size or not because it is really small!

Also, I don’t really need the little bags they send. So the $10 might have sounded like a great deal at the time, but for me the appeal is just not there. Are you still receiving your MyGlam or have you moved on to another beauty subscription service?

Nail Polish in Everything I Read!

Seems like Nail Polish is everywhere right now. And that’s not a bad thing after all, is it? Here are just a few of the ads I’ve seen in my own magazine subscriptions over the last couple of months. I still see them but I’ve stopped taking pix since now it seems like I’m seeing them everyday!

So what magazines have you seen nail polish ads in?

SoFlaJo Blog Designer Kudos

I have to tell you I am SOOOO in love with my blog design. My friend Jamie from Nails Adored is the designer. I give her all the credit for working with me to give me exactly what I was looking for! I can’t tell you how happy I am with the results! From the Dragon graphic, which is painted on my Harley tanks, to the ghost image on the right side of my banner of my actual bike. I chose the font God of War and she made it MINE with that map grid behind it!

Jamie is a real sweetheart and extremely talented. She designed my blog and my graphics. I have done blogs before and coming up with all the things that make it your own is so much work. She did it lightening fast and was waiting on me, not the other way around. She “works for polish” OMG, how cool is that? Well, I didn’t want to slight her for her awesome work. And I had some of those fantastic bloom.com vouchers I had purchased from several deal sites. When I asked her what she wanted she said with NO HESITATION the OPI Holland collection! Hey, I could agree with her there! I’m such an OPI fiend, too. I knew she also longed for OPI Ink and I picked up one of those in my jaunts around town. I also sent her some other polish goodies, including my complete SoFlaJo Year of the Dragon Polish Collection, which she reviewed here on her site. I also sent her fun stuff for her kids so they would have fun opening up her nail mail with her. Here’s a pic of the OPI collection that bloom sent directly to her.

And she JUST is in the process or reviewing my new Spring Polish Collection

Do you think she did a good job with my blog? Did I pay her enough, I know how much internet designers can get for their work. Are you looking for a revamp of your blog or website? I think the best advertising is a happy customer, and I truly am! Thank you Jamie, many times over!

6 Spring Flowers Polish Collection

Zoya LE NYFW Boxes

Yes. I succumbed. I couldn’t help it. It was the fault of my friend Katie. I didn’t think I needed the new Zoya LE Boxes for New York Fashion Week. She made me think otherwise! LOL When she posted pix of the Peter Som Box and said how much the green was different than any she’d ever seen, I knew I was in trouble. If she hadn’t seen it and didn’t have it in her collection, it was a good bet I hadn’t and didn’t either! I have at least 100 Zoyas. Don’t make me go upstairs in my polish area, pull out the overflowing Helmer and count them all. Suffice it to say they fill an entire drawer and also go into another drawer! Ack! HOW did that happen?!?! Aren’t I the OPI lover?

But not one to leave well enough alone, I figured if I was buying one NYFW LE Box I had to have the other. Like a set of matching book ends, dontcha know?! So I also have the Bibhu Mohapatra Box. Since I was late to the party, I wasn’t able to buy them directly from Zoya. I bought them on eBay from a seller who was charging the same $24 price that Zoya charged, so she was probably an authorized dealer. That’s good because I’m not fond of eBay scalpers or bidder stupidity (lemming mentality). She also gave me discounted shipping and after ordering over the weekend, they arrived Tuesday, even with a postal holiday yesterday. She also included a couple of beauty samples. Idk if there will be any of the LE Boxes left by the time you read this, but she has a nice selection of beauty items in her store you might enjoy. Check her out at THIS LINK.

OK, now here’s the kicker. You’ve seen the names of the bottles in the Peter Som collection haven’t you? Evvie, Audrey, Katherine. Katherine? Is that right? That’s what it says on the Zoya Page doesn’t it? BUT, what does your bottle label say? Mine is Katharine. Katie was quick to contact Zoya for an explanation for this. They sent her a new sticker with the Katherine spelling! Should I or shouldn’t I? 🙂

zoya le

Did you buy the NYFW LE Boxes? Do you plan on doing it, if you can still find them at a reasonable price? Will you actually use them once you get them? That’s always my biggest problem. Now that I have a true collector’s item, do I dare use it? What will you do?
