Fort Lauderdale Beach Erosion from Hurricane Sandy

This is “my” beautiful Fort Lauderdale Beach with stills and video I put into a video from the time Hurricane Sandy was out in the Atlantic over The Bahamas, till what it actually looks like today. It is a mess and will take a long time to repair. Mother Nature doesn’t play nice! ūüôĀ

There are several videos on YouTube that you can watch about this disaster on our beach. They all make me sad. I love this beach so much and we have thousands of visitors, so it’s obvious a lot of people feel the same way I do about it. I hope future plans will somehow help protect this part of the beach more. The waves here are more intense than the rest of the beach and this is where our “surfers” like to hang out. I hope the cleanup doesn’t cost an arm and a leg, too.

Thankfully, Everybody LOVES Nail Polish!

If you’ve been following my blog you know that my mom used to live with us. We did a lot of things together and we had a lot of fun. Last April she had a stroke, and although it didn’t end her ability to speak, it seriously hampered her ability to care for herself. After her stint in rehab was over, and because of her advanced age, we thought it was better for her to stay at the rehab and nursing home. They do an awesome job and I’m sure¬† you’ve seen my pix and videos of her on the SoFlaJo facebook page. She is in better care than I could give her at¬†home, and she is able to socialize in a better setting as well.

So on to the reason for this post! Tuesdays at the nursing home are manicure days! A gal who has come to be a dear friend, and who LOVES her own nails looking blingy, is the one that does the manicures. There is no extra charge for it, it is one of the social events on their very booked social calendar for the residents! The residents gather in one of the designated rooms and it’s like a coffee clache with all of them there! I have had so much fun when I’ve been able to attend. Elainey also will go around to the individual resident’s rooms if they are not capable of coming to the mani gathering.

I asked the Activities Director, Nicole, if I could donate some polishes and maybe makeup. She said “Oh Yes, but the makeup has to be new, not so with the polish.” Aha – did I find a great way to get rid of polishes I either don’t like or didn’t want anymore and didn’t think they were ones anyone would want to swap. BUT, I also gathered together some of my unused makeup and hair supplies because Nicole makes “goodie bags” for the residents for special occasions like birthdays and holidays since many of them don’t have any visitors. And that really makes me sad. I’ve done my best to learn the names of many of the residents, at least the ones who are out socializing. And I can confirm that I don’t see some of them ever have a visitor.

A Nail Polish & Goodie Bag donation I made to the nursing home.

So, during this month of November when we should all be thankful for something, I’m thankful that Mom is still with us and that she is receiving such good care. Maybe you would like to take some time out of your schedule and pop in on a local nursing home with a bag of nail polish and makeup¬†(and I’m sure you’re gonna tell me¬†you’re very¬†busy), but think what it would be like to be all alone with no visitors that come to see you. And not all of the residents are elderly. Many have had accidents or illnesses that have placed them in continued care.

If you are interested in just sending off a care package to my mom’s facility, please feel free to send it to:

Broward Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Attn: Nicole, 1330 South Andrews Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316

Remember to be Thankful this month. And Happy Thanksgiving!

BzzAgent Eukanuba Dog Food

OMG, have you ever smelled a dog or cat’s bad breath? It’s enough to make you want to gag. So how do you think your poor fur babies feel? All the tartar build-up in their mouths leads to bad breath and tooth decay and that can lead to far worse health problems.

I feel lucky to have been chosen by the BzzCampaign to spread the word about Eukanuba pet foods, which are recommended by vets. This particular Bzz is really exciting because I can introduce you to 3D DentaDefense. According to their testing, 3D DetaDefense, which is in all their adult dry dog foods, reduces tartar build-up an average of 47% but up to a whopping 80% in 28 days, reduces plaque, and maintains healthy teeth.

Eukanuba has been in the forefront of canine nutrition for over 40 years. They’ve accomplished some pretty impressive statistics along the way. Their food contains 0% fillers and is based on high quality animal-based proteins. It contains antioxidants to help strengthen your dog’s immune system. Dog experts and vets recommend them and they have a 110% money-back satisfaction guarantee by contacting them direct.

The kit I got included some very generous coupons which I shared with my favorite charity that you know I work with and mention often, Abandoned Pet Rescue. They also sent along a dog chew ball and tether. What dog doesn’t like that? But what I also got was a very interesting flashlight and instruction card. Not your ordinary flashlight, this one has uv bulbs, and the card shows you what to look for regarding the difference of natural lighting and the ultraviolet light so you will be able to spot the tartar build-up. Can I just say that when I got my fur baby’s (ALL OF THEM) mouths open (one at a time) and shined in that light on their teeth – YUCK!!! The tartar on at least two of them was pretty bad. I wasn’t able to take pictures of them because they weren’t too cooperative. But maybe you don’t really want to see what it looked like anyway! So I’m looking forward to seeing rewarding results with the brand!

To learn more about Eukanuba’s brands and where to shop for them, check out their website.

The items were sent to me for review by BzzAgent. They in no way influenced my review.

Thanks for checking out today’s post!

Hallloween Swaps!

ATTN: PICTURE HEAVY

I’ve got to tell you, as if you didn’t already know,

I LOVE Halloween!

Last year I did a couple of Halloween swaps that were so much fun, so I was pretty excited to be involved in FOUR this year! And I got some really great stuff!

From my friend Rachel at Glam Polish in Australia (click her for her¬†blog link btw) I got beautiful Ozotics, Vegemite (which I LOVE thanks to her always sending it to me), a boomerang, a couple of Koala bears, unshelled macadamia nuts (I’ve never seen them that way before)¬†and a Picture Polish Dorothy for my hubby Joe (who collects anything Wizard of Oz)!

She also sent me one of her own handmade polishes! And it is beautiful!

My next swap was with my friend Nikki. She and I go back awhile and she lives near where I used to in Michigan. She is a huge penguin fanatic. Just look at this cute package!

She sent me two Sephora OPI polishes I’d been after as well as the darling black and orange Ty kitty. Also lots of goodies to use in my Halloween party theme!

I swapped as well with a fellow polish maker Kirsten from All That Glitters who sent me four of her fabulous polishes and a Starbucks gift card!

And here’s a really quick and uncleaned up mani because I wanted to see what my favorite one would look like on – Witch Craft!

I also did a Secret Halloween swap. From a nice gal named Andrea I got more polishes – China Glaze and my first Miso –¬†and¬†beauty goodies!

I’m already involved in two Secret Santa swaps as well as two other Christmas swaps. I am looking forward to sharing all those goodies with you next month, too!

Eradicate H8 Nov 8! Stop Bullying Now!

Bullying is not funny. It is not cool. It is not right. And more importantly, it is not okay.

Most of us are, thankfully, residents of countries that support tolerance and many of our families have settled in these places simply for that reason. Generations later, it is our responsibility to perpetuate that message of tolerance across our new social platforms, including the internet.

As members of the nail polish blogging community, we all share a love of beauty, color, and lacquer. Other than that, we are remarkably different: from our race to our religion to our hair color…even to our polish application techniques. To marginalize anyone because of those differences is completely unacceptable and today I take a stand against that. I refuse to allow other people’s view of “normal” dictate how I behave, believe, and blog.

In solidarity with a multitude of bloggers linked below, my purple manicure represents my proud commitment to the No H8 movement. Today, November 8, I dedicate my post to ending bullying of any kind and to encouraging diversity and imperfection among our colorful community.

(nails inc franklin’s row over cheyne walk. Sation Periwinkle Princess over unknown purple.)

“Bullying” is not a new concept. When I started school in the 1960’s I remember distinctly the one and only time I was bullied. Two of my little friends and I were walking in front of the school and an older boy (4th grade maybe) pushed us and I stepped in a dirty puddle of water with my new white lace anklets and little red buckle shoes. I was so mad that without thinking I turned and shoved him. I’m sure that was a surprise to him and I realized from then on my friends¬†and I would not¬†be bullied. I’ve always stood up for the ones that can’t¬†and I’m doing it today as I stand in solidarity with many others who feel the same way.

Thank you for sharing the word with us! Click Here to view the Eradicate H8 blog.
